Alexander (Xander) Wilkinson first came to Emmanuel Church in late 1990. When first joining the Emmanuel family, Xander was in the Men and Boy’s Choir under the direction of Winfred Johnston. In 1992 Xander began playing flute under the guidance of Linda Betrand, the girls handbell choir director that time. In 1994, Xander decided that the oboe was the next instrument that needed exploring, doing so by studying with Jane Murray. In 1995, Xander became the first non-female member of the Emmanuel handbell choir. In 1997, Xander became co-director of the handbell choir and then took on the responsibility solely in 1998. This position was held until departing for college to get a degree in music education with applied studies of oboe and English horn. In addition, the musical talents that are shared during our Sunday services can be seen with the Newport Community Band and the Newport Community Orchestra, both at Salve Regina University, Warwick Symphony Orchestra , as well as with Focal Winds Woodwind Trio. Xander holds an Associates of Applied Science from The Community College of Rhode Island in Clinical Laboratory Technology, and is also a board certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
