19th Rector of Emmanuel Church

My fellow parishioners of Emmanuel Church,

It has been a year since Della Wager Wells+ came to us as our priest in charge. And what a year it has been! She has worked tirelessly, getting to know the people of Emmanuel, and to feed and nurture us all spiritually and pastorally.

This Cradle Episcopalian’s journey has taken her from her beginnings in her childhood parish , to deep commitments in every parish of her adult life, serving in nearly every lay capacity, to her call to the seminary and ministry, to a fellowship in Jerusalem, and now , to us here at Emmanuel. We have enjoyed the connections of her life and Holy Land experiences, woven into her weekly sermons. A visit to her office, can garner an interesting story or two around her mementos.

Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic, Della+ has maintained our connections with the Church and each other, bringing services, Bible and Lenten studies and even coffee hour into our homes via Facebook, Zoom, Constant Contact and more. And through every “sticky wicket” we’ve seen her act with grace and confidence. All this confirms to us that we have been blessed with a perfect fit for Emmanuel.

Della’s husband Jere consistently offers his enthusiastic support. His facilitation of Bible studies and Lenten discussions have been ways that he actively contributes to our church community.

At a special vestry meeting last week, the vestry voted unanimously to call Della+ as the newest Rector of Emmanuel Church. The members recognized Della+ for her kindness, willingness to listen, patience, commitment and positive manner. Letters from Bishop Knisley and Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew, Canon to the Ordinary, echoed their support and pleasure of our decision. And Praise God, Della+ accepted.

Please join the Wardens and Vestry in welcoming Della Wager Wells+ as the 19th Rector of Emmanuel Church, Newport, Rhode Island.

Peace and Love,
Debra A.
Senior Warden of Emmanuel Church, Newport
